Summer Sampler 2019 Block 16: Equilateral triangles

Happy Labor Day to my U.S. peeps! But it's Monday, so holiday or no, we've got a quilt block to make.

This week's Summer Sampler 2019: Piecing Bootcamp block pattern is Twist and Turn, designed by Jemima Flendt of Tied With a Ribbon. This week's Bootcamp skill is all about equilateral triangles, a versatile and interesting shape when used in piecing.

If you haven't sewn with equilateral triangles before, you'll be pleasantly surprised at how easy they are to piece! After a couple of weeks' worth of challenging blocks, this one will seem like a breeze. I think the little chopped-off corners on the printable template that is included with this month's pattern are the key to easily piecing equilateral triangles. In the past, I've tried using a ruler to cut my own triangles from strips of fabric. While that method might make for easier cutting than a paper template (which is fiddly and kind of a pain), having those little tabbed corners is HUGE for more accurate piecing. The corners help you see exactly where to stop and start your seams. I loved it!

Another thing I love: The design possibilities you get when you put together triangles like this. In fact, this block's design comes almost entirely from where you place the colored triangles versus the background triangles, so if you're feeling especially creative today, feel free to mix it up and make your own design, just by varying your color placements!

It's not too late to join us in the Summer Sampler 2019: Piecing Bootcamp quilt-along! Each block tackles a new piecing skill or technique. Join us to up your quilting game, and you'll get immediate access to all 21 blocks, plus finishing instructions for two different layouts. Click here to join!
