WIP Wednesday: Handwork

I spent the past weekend on retreat with some quilty friends from around the midwest—Faith, Anna, Holly, Jeni, and some newer friends too. While it was definitely a sewing retreat, I guess I just wasn’t motivated to pack up my sewing machine and all my fabric and supplies, so I brought a couple of handwork projects with me instead.

Last week I did a little embroidery with my daughter and her friend, which inspired me to try something new to me: Cross-stitch. I picked up Frosted Pumpkin Stitchery’s Summer Sampler pattern and got as far as one whole square finished. See, it’s a camper! : ) Faith asked me as I was working on it, “Do you think you’ll ever finish that?” Gotta be honest/realistic: I kinda doubt it. LOL. But it’s fun for now! And I do like having a TV-watching project. So we’ll see how far I get.

I also got this knitting project back out. Some of you might remember I knitted a Christmas stocking last year right before the holidays that turned out ridiculously, comically oversized. So I’m starting over with smaller needles, and this attempt looks a lot more reasonable so far. I made some good progress on it this weekend—maybe I’ll even have one done in time for Christmas!

Okay, so what are you working on this week? Let’s see it!

WIP Wednesday: Sewtopiated

Happy Wednesday! I hope you all are making as much progress on your to-do lists as I am! Yay for productivity. : )

I think it’s thanks to a wonderful weekend spent hanging out at the Drake Hotel in Chicago for Sewtopia. I had such a great time at this retreat! If you have a chance to go to one in the future, I can’t recommend it enough. (The Sewtopia crew just announced that the next one will be in Atlanta! Woot!) I roomed with Angela and Faith, and the three of us had waaaaay too much fun together. It was simultaneously exhausting and refreshing. : )

The weekend included classes with a couple of truly amazing and inspiring ladies—Rita of Red Pepper Quilts and Latifah of Latifah Saafir Studios. I wasn’t sure I would ever get a chance to meet Rita, since she comes all the way from Australia, so I feel lucky to have taken a class with her, and she is so adorable, sweet, and talented! We learned her Kansas Dugout quilt block, which includes lots of Y-seams, but came together surprisingly well.

With Latifah, we made her fabulous Molehills quilt. Curves aren’t exactly my thing, but again, the blocks came together so much more easily than I expected! Latifah is an amazing teacher—please take a class from her if you have the opportunity. My favorite thing about both of this weekend’s classes was that the projects were way outside of my comfort zone, so I probably would not have been willing to tackle them on my own.

Hopefully you’ll be seeing more of my versions of both of these after Quilt Market is done and I finally have time for some “me” sewing again. : )
