Terrazzo Quilt

Get the Terrazzo Quilt Pattern

As you might all remember, I spent the past several weeks working on a quilt for Free Spirit Fabric's "Modern Solids Challenge." Free Spirit challenged seven bloggers, including myself, to use Denyse Schmidt's gorgeous Modern Solids to create a quilt that was a modern twist on traditional. Of course, I could hardly sign up fast enough. 😊

My new Terrazzo quilt is the finished result! This is my updated twist on a classic Cathedral Window pattern. I love Cathedral Window quilts, but I don't love all the fussing with the fabric and sewing curved seams. As I was messing around on my design wall with Free Spirit's gorgeous solids, I realized that I could get that basic shape—and the illusion of a curve—using triangles. Cathedral Window units are also typically much smaller than my blocks, so I loved the super-sized aspect as well, and felt that modernized the pattern nicely!

I hope by now you've all seen the other beautiful entries the challenge bloggers came up with. Visit Free Spirit's Facebook page to check them all out—I love how we all took the same box of fabric and came up with such wildly different interpretations of "modern traditional." I am so impressed by every single entry and they look amazing all together.

And of course, as promised, you get to vote on your favorite quilt! So I hope you'll bounce over there and do that. Just warning you though, it may be difficult for you to decide which one to vote for! (And if you really can't decide, well then, just go ahead and vote for me. LOL.) You can vote by just commenting on the album of challenge quilts.

And yes, I am excited to be releasing a pattern for this quilt! It's relatively easy to piece and comes together quickly with two alternating block types. I've included two different options for piecing the long triangles and the neutral diamonds—I've got traditional piecing methods for both units (no templates required!), or for you hard-core folks out there (like me!), you can paper-piece for extreme accuracy. : )

As always, I'm offering the PDF pattern on sale for the first week of release for $4.99!

 (This sale is now over.)

Click here to buy it in my pattern shop. Grab it now while it's hot!

This pattern is a great way to start using your Modern Solids box, if you are lucky enough to have snagged one of those! (And you'll have plenty left over for more quilts after you're done!) I also think this quilt would look great with prints as well—it'd be a perfect pattern for large-scale prints by just eliminating the 9-patch blocks and putting one large piece of a print there instead. In fact, I may have to make one like that soon.

Enjoy!
